Ep 01
A Merlimau Story.
Air Kelapa Goyang and Fat Rice with Heavily Marinated with Herbs Fried Chicken.
See translation : Coconut Shake dan Nasi Lemak dengan Ayam Goreng Berempah
Food, is life ‘cause what is life without food, no?
Cheap food, affordable food, expensive food, junk food, fast food – semua pun best‐lah.
Sometimes,
when there is just nothing to talk about, food becomes the next best topic both of us can relate.
In this very first episode of A Merlimau Story – I am celebrating one of my favourites, of all time – Nasi Lemak,
featuring its surprisingly good counterpart Ayam Goreng Berempah, accompanied by an even better companion, Coconut Shake.
Man, doesn’t that sound like a legit cool band.
There’s this warung bawah pokok in Pekan Merlimau with this signboard (but it’s kind of kecil so I doubt you can see it anyway).
Now, look at that Coconut Shake posing in front of its signage, nampak so yummy kan? If you are always stuck in Klebang queuing long‐long for their infamous Coconut Shake, I guarantee you this one is also so yummy, it should be in your books now and Klebang can get cancelled, ‘cause Merlimau is cool too.
Anyway, it is A Merlimau Story, so of course the Coconut Shake beats somewhere else’s.
Oh wait, since this signboard is small, and I know you won’t catch it from the main road, let me draw you this equally tiny map to get you here.
If you are bad at map reading (like me), let google guide you to Coconut Shake Merlimau, pun boleh.
Though the weather was scorching hot, the shake made up for it, that we had a pretend ‘Starbucks’‐kind of‐meeting‐day here at the warung.
Look at this oh‐so‐pretentious flatlay of our stuffs, discussing work over that yummy Coconut Shake, topped with vanilla ice‐cream sprinkled with chocolate rice.
Our discussion lasted a good 5 minutes, when the star of the warung made its appearance, we just cannot tahan the herb‐ish aroma of the Ayam Goreng.
Also, it felt like we had the Nasi Lemak calling (haha exaggerated much, but we were also probably so hungry under the hot weather).
The nasi itself is good with what I felt like the right amount of santan, and since I really prefer ikan bilis in Nasi Lemak against kacang, I am all for this presentation of ikan bilis
sprinkled on top of the nasi.
Sambal is exceptionally very Melaka‐ish, bit on the hot side, but what is eating in Melaka if you can’t take spicy food.
The Ayam Goreng on the other hand, is a great extra for Nasi Lemak. It’s like when you are hungry, and you feel like one Nasi Lemak is not enough, but two is just too many – there’s this option where you add‐on a piece of chicken and all is alright.
Also, what makes me suka hati is that the service is quick – I would say it is even better than queuing for your burger at a certain Golden Arch restaurant.
Dah la kena beratur, lambat pulak tu.
(This is hungry‐me talking, so emo if it is food related. If kenyang perut suka hati, I guess, lapar perut, emo hati?)
Here, you just sit, and someone is there to take your order, and delivers the food on your table.
But, guys, if you are not into Nasi Lemak ‘cause you are not Malaysian enough (haha bitter), not to worry, there are plenty other food here that you can try.
You can have Bakso (a Merlimau version though, definitely not your authentic Indonesian ones), or Laksa.
Besides the shake version of Coconut, you can also get the non‐shake Coconut – in a glass, plastic or in its natural state of biji.
FYI, we had the small Coconut Shake, and now, still wondering if that is small, how would the big ones be looking like?
The vibe here is pretty cool too – metaphorically though. People are friendly and nice, be it the seller or customers.
If you are not a kampung person, and no longer have a non‐urban hometown, come over to
Merlimau. Soak in a little bit of kampung life that is not‐so‐kampung but definitely different than the fast‐pace KL we all know.
We will be bringing you more things to love here, undiscovered things that you never knew.
Afterall, orang Merlimau kata, singgah le, bukan jauh nau!
